Starry.

 Melbourne Lovers.

As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.

- Carl Jung

Mountain Man

I was recently introduced to the wonderful harmonic sound of Mountain Man, a trio of ladies from the United States, who my dear friends Wet Wings were opening for at the Toff in Town. Their music brought to mind images of the deep South, wild fields and white lace, watching a scene of destruction in slow motion. Tremendously moving.

Wood + Water

Long ago...
No one tore the ground with ploughshares
Or parcelled out the land
Or swept the sea with dripping oars -
The shore was the worlds end.
Clever human nature, victim of your own inventions,
Disastrously creative,
Why cordon cities with towered walls?
Why arm for war?

- Ovid, Amores, Book 3

I recently read Ronald Wrights A Short History of Progress (and have just started its continuation, What is America? A Short History of the New World Order).
It was a very moving analysis of the twentieth century's runaway growth of human overpopulation, consumption and technology, and how they have placed such tremendous demands on our natural capital (water, earth and air)  that we may never fully recover from the damage we have done as a civilization in such a minute period of time.

I hope that our civilization will not self-destruct as the early civilization of the Easter Islanders and the Sumerians had done. I find it highly unlikely however, that given the small amount of time we have to engineer environmentally sustainable precautions for running out of our natural capital (namely water, and waters keeper, wood), that mankind has enough sense and foresight to realise that we cannot continue consuming and progressing, as we do. We are burning out of time with the only creature who upholds and supports us and all of our creations, Earth. Like a petulant child who eats all their candy, then feels sick and dies of diabetes.

There is hope; though not for us

Pieces of Melbourne.

Staring out the window (a very nice window frame, wooden blinds, peeling paint and a concrete sill), meeting my neighbour Phil, from the level below / drinking Jasmine tea / eating a quinoa + vegetable + nectarine + peanut salad.
Melbourne is a nice place.

Perfection.

Black tee / a naked Kate / headdress tattoo / grunge + elegance. So dreamy, it is perfect.

Wet Winged Friends

My friends Lucy + Darian are in a band called Wet Wings.
They are simply amazing, and Ive had their song Running Like a Man stuck in my world for many days.
They came to stay with me in Melbourne last weekend, I saw them play with Mountain Man (above), another amazing sound from the United States.
I bought the last of their Skin to Soil cassettes and then felt bad that someone else that didn't know them could have purchased it.
And then I got over it and played Running Like a Man on repeat.
Much love to them kids.
PS. They made it to the Gorilla vs. Bear best of list. Rad.

Twins, New York

The Olsen Twins / New York City apartment / oversized shirts with heels / framed by a doorway / polished wooden floorboards / green + black / wrist adornment / wavy hair. I like.

Lack of Prints.

Little Konicas first roll of film in Melbourne.
Not the most ideal outcome - the negative got completely destroyed in the camera,
Nevertheless, she had fun.
The images are in fact from a day a friend and I spent in the Carlton gardens, complete with a few window frame shots (my favourite of the structural variety), and of course, some feet shots.
Lesson learnt for next time!

Pieces of Nikau.

One of our last nights at the Nikau flat (Wellington)
Beautiful Carla here modeling the fossilized shark teeth I made into a necklace.
And the jewelery I had just made in the studio that day.

The Heart is a Stone.

First blog post of 2011!
The dreamy sound of Beach House, whom I am seeing play in less than a month!
I heart this song greatly.
